Gerhard Fritz Kurt Schröder was born in Mossenberg, Lippe, Germany. He is a German politician. He served as Chancellor of Germany from 1998 to 2005. As a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, he led a coalition government of the SPD and the Greens. Before becoming a full-time politician, he was a lawyer, and before becoming Chancellor he served as Prime Minister of Lower Saxony from 1990–1998. He studied law at the University of Göttingen From 1966-71. In 1976, he passed his second law examination, and he subsequently worked as a lawyer until 1990.
