Frederick Jackson Turner was born in Portage, Wisconsin, USA. He was an American historian. He is best known for his essay "The Significance of the Frontier in American History", whose ideas formed the Frontier Thesis. He is also known for his theories of geographical sectionalism. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1884. He earned his Ph.D. in history from Johns Hopkins University in 1890. As a professor of history at Wisconsin, and later Harvard, he trained scores of students, who in turn dominated American history programs throughout the country.
