Sir Isaiah Berlin was born in Riga, Latvia. He was an English philosopher, essayist, social and political theorist, translator, professor and historian of ideas. He moved to Petrograd, Russia at the age of six, where he witnessed the revolutions of 1917. In 1921 his family came to England, and he was educated at St Paul's School, London and Corpus Christi College, Oxford. In 1932, at the age of 23, he was elected to a prize fellowship at All Souls College, Oxford. He earned an MA degree from Corpus Christi College, Oxford University in 1935. He translated works by Ivan Turgenev from Russian into English and, during the war, worked for the British Diplomatic Service. He was knighted in 1957. From 1957 to 1967 he was Chichele Professor of Social and Political Theory at the University of Oxford. He was President of the British Academy from 1974 to 1978. He also received the 1979 Jerusalem Prize for his writings on individual freedom. He wrote several books include: Karl Marx: His Life and Environment(biography), The Age of Enlightenment, The Hedgehog and the Fox(essay), Mr. Churchill in 1940(biography), Russian Thinkers(essay), Vico and Herder, The Sense of Reality, and The Roots of Romanticism.
