George Ivanovich Gurdjieff(G. I. Gurdjieff) was born in Alexandropol, Russia. He was an influential early 20th century Russian philosopher and spiritual teacher. He taught that most humans do not possess a unified mind-body consciousness and thus live their lives in a state of hypnotic "waking sleep", but that it is possible to transcend to a higher state of consciousness and achieve full human potential. He wrote several books include: Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson, Meetings with Remarkable Men, The Herald of Coming Good, The Inner Journey, and The Struggle of the Magicians.
