Coretta Scott King was born in Marion, Alabama. She was an American author, activist and singer. She helped lead the African-American Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. King was an active advocate for African-American equality. King met Martin Luther King, Jr. while in college and their participation escalated until they became central to the movement. In her early life Coretta was an accomplished singer and often incorporated music into her civil rights work. She graduated valedictorian from Lincoln Normal School in 1945 where she played trumpet and piano, sang in the chorus, and participated in school musicals and enrolled at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio during her senior year at Lincoln. King was honored for her activism in promoting human rights. King was inducted into the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame in 2009. She was the first African-American to lie in Georgia State Capitol upon her death. King has been referred to as "First Lady of the Civil Rights Movement".
