Frederick Douglass was born in Talbot County, Maryland, USA. He was an American abolitionist, orator, author, editor, statesman, and diplomat. After escaping from slavery in Maryland, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement from Massachusetts and New York, gaining note for his dazzling oratory and incisive antislavery writings. He wrote several autobiographies include: Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, My Bondage and My Freedom, and Life and Times of Frederick Douglass. He also actively supported women's suffrage. Without his approval, he became the first African American nominated for Vice President of the United States as the running mate and Vice Presidential nominee of Victoria Woodhull, on the Equal Rights Party ticket.
