John Maeda was born in Seattle, Washington, USA. He is an American world-renowned artist, computer scientist, Graphic Designer and educator whose career reflects his philosophy of humanizing technology. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in Computer Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received his PhD in Design Science from the University of Tsukuba Institute of Art and Design in Japan and an MBA degree from Arizona State University. He is formerly Design Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. He also serves on the Board of Directors of consumer electronics company Sonos and global advertising firm Wieden+Kennedy. He was a Professor at the MIT Media Lab for 12 years. He resigned from MIT in 2008 to become the President of the Rhode Island School of Design. In 2001, he received the National Design Award for Communication Design in the United States, Japan's Mainichi Design Prize in 2002, and the Raymond Loewy Foundation Prize in Germany in 2005. He has published four books, including MAEDA@MEDIA and his most recent, The Laws of Simplicity, which has been translated into 14 languages.
