John D. Wainwright was born in Syracuse, New York, USA. He was an American military officer during the American Civil War. He received the Medal of Honor for gallantry during the Second Battle of Fort Fisher on January 15, 1865. After the war, he became a companion of the District of Columbia Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States.
