John Tyndall was born in Leighlinbridge, County Carlow, Ireland. He was a Irish physicist. His initial scientific fame arose in the 1850s from his study of diamagnetism. Later he made discoveries in the realms of infrared radiation and the physical properties of air. He studied at the University of Marburg. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1852. From 1853 to 1887 he was professor of Natural Philosophy at the Royal Institution of Great Britain in London. He received many awards, including Royal Medal, Royal Society Bakerian Medal, and Rumford Medal. He wrote several books include: The Glaciers of the Alps, On Radiation, Sound, Heat as a Mode of Motion, Faraday as a Discoverer, Hours Of Exercise In The Alps, Six Lectures on Light, New Fragments, Fragaments of Science, and Contributions to Molecular Physics in the Domain of Radiant Heat.
