John Andrew Sutherland is an English professor, newspaper columnist and author. Currently he is an Emeritus Lord Northcliffe Professor of Modern English Literature at University College London. He graduated from the University of Leicester in 1964. He received his PhD from the University of Edinburgh, where he began his academic career as an assistant lecturer. He specialises in Victorian fiction, 20th century literature, and the history of publishing. Apart from writing a regular column in the The Guardian newspaper, he has published seventeen books and is editing the forthcoming Oxford Companion to Popular Fiction. He has written several books include: Can Jane Eyre be happy?, Who betrays Elizabeth Bennet?, Last Drink to LA, The life of Walter Scott, Lives of the Novelists, Inside Bleak House, A Little History of Literature, The War On The Old, and The boy who loved books (memoir).
