John Stuart Blackie was born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was a Scottish professor. He studied at Marischal College, in Aberdeen. Declining to enter the church he took a law degree at the University of Edinburgh and joined the Scottish bar. In 1839, he was appointed Professor of Humanity at Marischal College, Aberdeen and in 1860 he achieved his ambition when he was appointed to the Chair of Greek at the University of Edinburgh. He wrote several books include: Lays of the Highlands and islands, The Language And Literature Of The Scottish Highlands, Songs Of Religion And Life, The natural history of atheism, The Wisdom Of Goethe, Life of Robert Burns, and The pronunciation of Greek: accent and quantity.
