John Stewart Bell was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He was a Northern Irish physicist, and the originator of Bell's theorem, an important theorem in quantum physics regarding hidden variable theories. He earned a BS degree in experimental physics in 1948 and a BS degree in Mathematical Physics in 1949 both from Queen's University Belfast. He received his PhD in physics at the University of Birmingham in 1956, specialising in nuclear physics and quantum field theory. Bell's career began with the UK Atomic Energy Research Establishment, near Harwell, Oxfordshire, known as AERE or Harwell Laboratory. After several years he moved to work for the European Organization for Nuclear Research, in Geneva, Switzerland. He received many awards, including Dannie Heineman Prize for Mathematical Physics, Hughes Medal, and Paul Dirac Medal and Prize.
