John Robert Gregg was born in Rockcorry, County Monaghan, Ireland. He was an Irish-born American teacher, publisher and the inventor of the eponymous shorthand system Gregg Shorthand. He developed an interest in speed writing when he was 10 years old, and by the age of 21, in Glasgow, he had published a 28-page pamphlet, Light-Line Phonography, presenting his own shorthand alphabet, which was phonetic and based on the regular cursive movements of familiar longhand. This alphabet later was adapted to 13 languages. In 1893, he emigrated to the United States, where he published in the same year Gregg Shorthand. The method met with great success in the new country, and Gregg settled in Chicago where he authored numerous books for the Gregg Publishing Company on the subjects of shorthand and contemporary business practices.
