John Muir was born in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland. He was a Scottish-born American environmentalist, naturalist, geologist, mountaineer and author. He studied at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His activism has helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia National Park and many other wilderness areas. The Sierra Club, which he co-founded, is a prominent American conservation organization. The 211-mile John Muir Trail, a hiking trail in the Sierra Nevada, was named in his honor. In Scotland, the John Muir Way, a 130-mile-long route, was named in honor of him. He wrote several books include: The mountains of California, Our National Parks, Stickeen, My first summer in the Sierra, The Yosemite, The Story of My Boyhood and Youth, Travels in Alaska, A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf, and Steep Trails.
