Sir John Monash was born in West Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. He was an Australian civil engineer and military commander of the First World War. Active in the prewar militia, he commanded an infantry brigade at the Battle of Gallipoli during the Dardanelles Campaign in Turkey, and in 1916–1917 he commanded a division on the Western Front. He attended Melbourne University, obtaining degrees in the arts, civil engineering, and law. He worked as a civil engineer, and played a major role in introducing reinforced concrete to Australian engineering practice. He initially worked for private contractors on bridge and railway construction, and as their advocate in contract arbitrations. He recalled his war experiences in The Australian Victories in France in 1918 and War Letters. He received many awards, including Order of St Michael and St George (UK), Order of the Bath (UK), Legion of Honour (France), Order of the Crown (Belgium), Croix de guerre (Belgium), and Distinguished Service Medal (U.S. Army).
