John Milton Yinger was born in Quincy, Michigan, USA. He was an American sociologist. He was president of the American Sociological Association from 1976–1977. He earned a BA degree in Sociology from DePauw University and an MA degree from Louisiana State University. He received his PhD from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He was Emeritus professor of Sociology at Oberlin College from 1947-1987. He was a Guggenheim Fellow, a Fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and a Fellow of Clare Hall at Cambridge University. He wrote several books include: Religion in the Struggle for Power, Religion, society, and the individual, Toward a field theory of behavior, Countercultures, Racial and cultural minorities (with George Simpson, Won- Anisfield-Wolf Book Award), and Ethnicity: Source of Strength? Source of Conflict?.
