John Milton Hay was born in Salem, Indiana, USA. He was an American politician, diplomat, journalist, author, biographer and poet. He served as a private secretary and assistant to Abraham Lincoln. He served as the United States Secretary of State under Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt from 1898-1905. He served as the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1897-1898. He earned an MA degree from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He worked for the New-York Tribune under Horace Greeley and Whitelaw Reid. He wrote several books include: Castilian days, Pike County Ballads (poetry), The Bread-winners (novel), Abraham Lincoln: A History (with John Nicolay), and The complete poetical works of John Hay (poetry).
