John McAleer was an American author and professor. He received a master's degree from Boston College in 1947 and his PhD from Harvard University in 1955. He taught English at Boston College. He also was a member of the faculty of the Woods College of Advancing Studies. He was well known for his vast knowledge of mystery authors and their works. He worked for John F. Kennedy in his first campaign for political office, helping him get elected to Congress in 1946. He wrote several books include: Rex Stout (biography, Won- Edgar Award for Best crime literature), Unit Pride (novel), Ralph Waldo Emerson: Days of Encounter (biography), Further Education in Northern Ireland (With Gerry McAleavy), Mystery Writing in a Nutshell, and Representing Africa.
