John Charles Hockenberry was born in Dayton, Ohio, USA. He is an American journalist, a four-time Emmy Award winner and three-time Peabody Award winner. He studied mathematics at the University of Chicago, and studied harpsichord and piano at the University of Oregon. From April 2008 until August 2017, he was the host of The Takeaway, a live national news program created by Public Radio International and WNYC New York. He has written for The New York Times, The New Yorker, Wired, The Columbia Journalism Review, Metropolis, and The Washington Post. In 1981, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he was a newscaster. He has written several books include: Moving Violations (Won- Ambassador Book Award for American Studies, Nominations- National Book Critics Circle Award for Biography/Autobiography) and A River Out Of Eden (novel).
