John Milton Hay was born in Salem, Indiana, USA. He was an American Republican politician, diplomat, journalist and author. Beginning as a private secretary and assistant to Abraham Lincoln, Hay's highest office was United States Secretary of State under Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. He worked for Lincoln's successful presidential campaign and became one of his private secretaries at the White House. He earned an MA degree from Brown University. He served as the US Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1897-1898. He worked for the New-York Tribune under Horace Greeley and Whitelaw Reid. He wrote several books include: Castilian days, Pike County Ballads (poetry), The Bread-winners (novel), Abraham Lincoln (bibliography), In Praise of Omar, and A Poet in Exile.
