John Godfrey Saxe was born in Highgate, Vermont, USA. He was an American poet known for his re-telling of the Indian parable "The Blind Men and the Elephant", which introduced the story to a Western audience. He graduated from Middlebury College in 1839. He was admitted to the Vermont bar in 1843. He practised successfully in Franklin County. In 1850-51 he serves as state's attorney for Chittenden County. He was editor of the Sentinel in Burlington, Vermont, from 1850 to 1856. In 1856, he served as attorney-general of Vermont. He soon grew tired of legal work and pursued a writing career, getting poems such as The Rhyme of the Rail published in The Knickerbocker. He tried twice to be elected to the position of Governor of his home state of Vermont, but failed twice.
