John Warne Gates was born in West Chicago, Illinois, USA. He was an American industrialist. He was a pioneer promoter of barbed wire. He studied at North Central College. He interested in barbed wire and became a salesman for the Washburn-Moen Company. He was the president of Republic Steel and of the Texas Company, later known as Texaco.
