John C. "Jay" Cocks, Jr. is an American film critic and screenwriter. He graduated from Kenyon College. He was a critic for Time, Newsweek, and Rolling Stone, among other magazines. As a screenwriter, he is notable for his collaborations with Martin Scorsese, particularly on the director's films The Age of Innocence (nominated- Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay), Gangs of New York (nominated- Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay), and Silence.
