John Marshall Buchanan was born in Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. He is the former World Cup winning coach of the Australia national cricket team and of Kolkata Knight Riders team in the Indian Premier League. He is also known in cricketing circles as 'Ned Flanders', due to his similarity in appearance to The Simpsons character. In 2009, he was inducted into the Queensland Sport Hall of Fame. He was appointed to the role of Director of Cricket for New Zealand Cricket in May 2011. In July 2013, he resigned from his role as Director of cricket.
