John Bracken was born in Ellisville, Ontario, Canada. He was a Canadian agronomist and politician. He was the 11th and longest-serving Premier of Manitoba from 1922–1943 and leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada from 1942–1948. He was a leader of the Opposition from 1945-1948. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba for The Pas from 1922-1943, and member of the Canadian Parliament for Neepawa from 1945-1949. He was educated at Brockville Collegiate, Ontario Agricultural College, and the University of Illinois. He was a professor of animal husbandry at the University of Saskatchewan from 1910 to 1920. He became President of the Manitoba Agricultural College. He wrote several books include: Great Plants for Cool Places, Problem of Crop Production, Crop production in western Canada, and Dry Farming in Western Canada.
