John Bigelow was born in New York, USA. He was an American lawyer, diplomat, journalist, politician and author. He graduated from Union College in 1835. He was admitted to the bar in 1838. From 1849 to 1861, he was one of the editors and co-owners of the New York Evening Post. In the election campaign of 1856, he was a principal adviser of the Republican Party’s first presidential candidate, John Charles Frémont. In 1865, he was appointed American Ambassador to France. He was elected Secretary of State of New York. He was one of the few American works to take a positive view of Haitian independence. He was the discoverer and first editor of Benjamin Franklin’s long-lost Autobiography. He wrote several books include: The Life of Samuel J. Tilden (biography), Jamaica in 1850, Molinos The Quietist, and France and the Confederate Navy.
