John Beecher was born in New York City, New York, USA. He was an American poet, activist and journalist who wrote about the Southern United States during the Great Depression and the American Civil Rights Movement. He also wrote several of the radical activist poems he eventually became known for. He was active in the American labor and civil rights movements. He earned a BA degree from the University of Alabama in 1924. He earned a master's degree in English at the University of Wisconsin in 1929. He published Report to the Stockholders in 1933, a nine-part poem about the unfair treatment of mill workers. He taught at Arizona State University in the late 1950s. As a writer and journalist, he contributed to publications such as The Nation, Ramparts, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the New York Times. He wrote several poems include: Here I Stand, And I Will Be Heard, Land of the Free, In Egypt Land, Phantom City, Undesirables, To Live and Die in Dixie, Hear the Wind Blow, and One More River to Cross.
