About
John Batman was born in Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia. He was an Australian farmer, businessman and explorer who was one of the first white people to live in Melbourne. In Tasmania he started farming on land the government gave him. He brought more land. During this time, he was involved in conflicts with the Tasmanian Aborigines. He is best known for his role in the founding of the settlement on the Yarra River which became the city of Melbourne, eventual capital of the new Colony of Victoria, and one of Australia's largest and most important cities.
