John Arthur Thomas Robinson was born in Canterbury, Kent, England. He was an English New Testament scholar, author and the Anglican Bishop of Woolwich. He studied at Marlborough College, Jesus College, Cambridge, Trinity College, Cambridge, and Westcott House, Cambridge. He was a lecturer at Trinity College, Cambridge, and later Dean of Trinity College. He was ordained in the Church of England as a deacon in 1945 and as a priest in 1946. In 1948, he became chaplain of Wells Theological College, where he wrote his first book, In the End, God. In 1951, he was appointed Fellow and Dean of Clare College, Cambridge and a lecturer in divinity at Cambridge University. He wrote other books include: On being the church in the world, Honest to God, Exploration into God, The human face of God, Redating the New Testament, Truth is two-eyed, and Wrestling with Romans.
