Johann Baptist Metz was born in Auerbach in der Oberpfalz, Germany. He is a German Catholic theologian. He is Ordinary Professor of Fundamental Theology, Emeritus, at Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster, Germany. He studied at the University of Innsbruck. A student of Karl Rahner, he broke with Rahner's transcendental theology in a turn to a theology rooted in praxis. He is one of the most influential post-Vatican II German theologians. His thought turns around fundamental attention to the suffering of others. He has written several books include: Poverty of Spirit, Theology of the world, Followers of Christ, Faith in History and Society, The Courage to Pray (with Karl Rahner), The emergent church, Faith and the Future (with Jürgen Moltmann), and A Passion for God.
