Joanna Russ was born in New York City, New York, USA. She was an American author, novelist, writer, professor and radical feminist. She earned a BA degree in English from Cornell University in 1957. She received her MFA from Yale Drama School in 1960. After teaching at several universities, including Cornell, she became a full professor of English at the University of Washington. She wrote several novels include: Picnic on Paradise (Nominations: Nebula Award for Best Novel), And Chaos Died (Nominations: Nebula Award for Best Novel, Locus Award for Best Novel), The Female Man (Won- James Tiptree Jr. Award, Tähtivaeltaja Award), We Who Are About To..., The Two of Them, and On Strike Against God. Her Short fiction collections, including The Adventures of Alyx, The Zanzibar Cat, Extra(ordinary) People, and The Hidden Side of the Moon (Nominations: Locus Award for Best Collection). Her nonfiction works, including How to Suppress Women's Writing, To Write Like a Woman (essays, Nominations: Hugo Award for Best Related Work, Locus Award for Best Non-Fiction), and The Country You Have Never Seen (essays, Nominations: Locus Award for Best Non-Fiction). Her science fiction short story, entitled When It Changed won the Nebula Award for Best Short Story in 1972, and was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Short Story in 1973. Her science fiction novella, entitled Souls won the Hugo Award for Best Novella, and was nominated for the Nebula Award for Best Novella.
