Sister Joan D. Chittister was born in DuBois, Pennsylvania, USA. She is a Benedictine nun, author, lecturer and speaker. She earned a master's degree from the University of Notre Dame and his Ph.D. in speech communication theory from Pennsylvania State University. She was also a research associate of St. Edmund's College, Cambridge University. She writes a column for the National Catholic Reporter, "From Where I Stand". She is co-chair of the Global Peace Initiative of Women.
