James Dennis Carroll was born in New York City, New York, USA. He was an American author, poet, singer and punk musician. He was best known for his 1978 autobiographical work The Basketball Diaries, which inspired the 1995 film of the same name, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Carroll. He studied at Wagner College and Columbia University. He wrote other books include: Organic Trains (poems), 4 Ups and 1 Down (poetry), Living at the Movies (poetry), The book of nods (poetry), Forced Entries (memoir), Fear of Dreaming (poetry), Void of Course (poetry), The Petting Zoo (novel).
