James Laurence Balsillie was born in Seaforth, Ontario, Canada. He is a Canadian businessman, philanthropist and former co-CEO of the Canadian company Research In Motion. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Trinity College at the University of Toronto in 1984. He earned an MBA degree from Harvard Business School in 1989. He received his PhD from Wilfrid Laurier University. He is also the founder of the Centre for International Governance Innovation, Canadian International Council, Balsillie School of International Affairs and the Arctic Research Foundation. In 2003, he was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario. In 2007, he donated $50 million to the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University and the Centre for International Governance Innovation. He served as a member of the United Nations Panel on Global Sustainability until 2012.
