Cynthia Jeanne Shaheen was born in St. Charles, Missouri, USA. She is an American Democratic politician who is the Senior United States Senator from New Hampshire, since 2009. She is the first female U.S. Senator in New Hampshire's history, was the first woman to be elected Governor of New Hampshire from 1997-2003, and she is the first woman to be elected as a U.S. Governor and a U.S. Senator. She served as New Hampshire State Senate from 1991-97. She earned a BA degree in English from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania in 1969. She earned an MA degree in Political Science from the University of Mississippi in 1973. She served as Director of the Harvard Institute of Politics. She married to Bill Shaheen. They have three daughters. She initially opposed same-sex marriage as governor of New Hampshire.
