Jane Gray Nelson was born in Hamilton, Ohio, USA. She is an American businesswoman, a former school teacher from 1973-1978, and represents Texas Senate District 12, encompassing parts of Denton and Tarrant counties. She was the first Republican woman ever appointed chair of a standing committee and now holds the distinction of being longest serving chair of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee in Texas history. She also serves as chair of the Sunset Advisory Commission. She studied at the University of North Texas. Nelson and her husband, Mike Nelson, have five adult children and nine grandchildren.
