Jane Jacobs was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA. She was an American-born Canadian journalist, author and urban planner. Her influential book The Death and Life of Great American Cities argued that urban renewal did not respect the needs of most city-dwellers. The book also introduced sociological concepts such as "eyes on the street" and "social capital". In 1944, she met and married architect Robert Hyde Jacobs. She worked for Scranton Tribune, trade magazine(secretary and editor), Sunday Herald Tribune, Cue magazine, Vogue, Amerika(reporter), and Architectural Forum(editor). She wrote other books include: The Economy of Cities, The Question of Separatism, Cities and the Wealth of Nations, Systems of Survival, The Nature of Economies, and Dark Age Ahead.
