About
James Tenney was born in Silver City, New Mexico, USA. He was an American composer and influential music theorist. He studied at the University of Denver and the Juilliard School of Music. He earned a B.A. degree from Bennington College in 1958. He earned an M.Mus.(Master of Music) degree from the University of Illinois in 1961. He served as a professor at California Institute of the Arts from 1970-75, the University of California at Santa Cruz from 1975-76, York University, Toronto from 1976-2000. He studied piano with Eduard Steuermann and composition with Chou Wen-chung. He also studied information theory under Lejaren Hiller.
