James R. "Jim" Carrigan was born in Mobridge, South Dakota, USA. He was an American federal judge. He graduated first in his law class from the University of North Dakota in 1953, and an LL.M. degree from New York University School of Law in 1956. He was in private practice in Williston, North Dakota from 1953 to 1954. He was an assistant professor of law at the University of Denver from 1956 to 1959. He was a professor of law at the University of Colorado from 1961 to 1967. He was a Justice of the Colorado Supreme Court from 1976 to 1979.
