James Norman Hall was born in Colfax, Iowa, USA. He was an American novelist, memoirist, soldier and social worker. He graduated from Grinnell College in 1910. He wrote the song "Sons of Old Grinnell," which is part of the college songbook. After graduation, he became a social worker in Boston, Massachusetts. He earned an MA degree from Harvard University. He served in the British army during World War I, then became a pilot for France's flying force, Lafayette Escadrille. He was taken prisoner by Germany and later honored as a war hero. His war memoirs Hall published in 1916 under the title Kitcher's Mob. In 1921 appeared their travel book Faery Lands of the South Seas. He wrote several novels with Charles Nordhoff include: Mutiny on the Bounty, Men Against the Sea, Pitcairn's Island, The Hurricane, and The Bounty Trilogy.
