James Harvey Robinson was born in Bloomington, Illinois, USA. He was an American historian who co-founded New History, which greatly broadened the scope of historical scholarship in relation to the social sciences. He earned an MA degree from Harvard University in 1888. He received his PhD from the University of Freiburg in 1890. He served as professor of European History at the University of Pennsylvania from 1891-1895, and Columbia University from 1895-1919. He served as president of the American Historical Association in 1929. He wrote several books include: The New History, The Mind in the Making, The Humanizing of Knowledge, The Ordeal of Civilization, The Human Comedy, An Introduction to the History of Western Europe, and The Development of Modern Europe.
