James Edward Hansen was born in Denison, Iowa, USA. He is an American physicist and adjunct professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University. He earned a BA degree in Physics and Mathematics with highest distinction in 1963, an MS degree in Astronomy in 1965, and his PhD in Physics in 1967, all three degrees received from the University of Iowa. He is best known for his research in the field of climatology, his testimony on climate change to congressional committees in 1988 that helped raise broad awareness of global warming, and his advocacy of action to avoid dangerous climate change. In recent years he has become a climate activist to mitigate the effects of climate change, on a few occasions leading to his arrest. From 1981 to 2013, he was the head of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York City. He has written several books include: Storms of My Grandchildren and Cotton Policy in China(with Fred Gale).
