James E. Burke was born in Rutland, Vermont, USA. He was an American businessman. He was the chief executive officer of Johnson & Johnson from 1976 to 1989, a company for which he worked forty years. He earned a BA degree from the College of the Holy Cross in 1947 and his MBA degree from Harvard Business School in 1949. He also received the Bower Award for Business Leadership in 1990. At a White House ceremony on August 9, 2000, President Bill Clinton awarded James E. Burke the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the country.
