James Buchanan, Jr. was born in Cove Gap, Pennsylvania, USA. He was an American democratic politician, diplomat and lawyer. He was the 15th President of the United States from 1857–1861, serving immediately prior to the American Civil War. He is the only president from Pennsylvania, the only president to remain a lifelong bachelor, and the last president born in the 18th century. He represented Pennsylvania in the United States House of Representatives and later the Senate. He served as Minister to Russia under President Andrew Jackson. He served as Secretary of State under President James K. Polk and as Ambassador to the United Kingdom under President Franklin Pierce. He studied at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He began his political career in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 1814–1816 as a member of the Federalist Party.
