Dr. John "Jack" Edward Lovelock was born in Crushington, New Zealand. He was a New Zealand athlete, and the 1936 Olympic champion in the 1500 metres. He studied medicine at the University of Otago. He graduated as a medical practitioner from Exeter College, Oxford.
