James Farl Powers was born in Jacksonville, Illinois, USA. He was an American novelist and short-story writer. He studied at Wright Junior College and Northwestern University in Chicago. He taught creative writing and English literature at Saint John's University. He had various jobs, such as insurance salesman, sales clerk, editor and bookstore clerk. He wrote several novels include: Morte d'Urban(won- National Book Award for Fiction) and Wheat that Springeth Green(nominations- National Book Award for Fiction). He wrote several short stories include: Prince of Darkness and other stories, Presence of Grace(nominations- National Book Award for Fiction), Look How the Fish Live, Estate of Grace, A Society Organized for War, and Old Bird a Love Story.
