Auguste Comte was born in Montpellier, France. He was a French philosopher who founded the discipline of sociology, coining the term, and the doctrine of positivism. He is sometimes regarded as the first philosopher of science in the modern sense of the term. He was a major influence on 19th-century thought, influencing the work of social thinkers such as Karl Marx, John Stuart Mill, and George Eliot. Comte's social theories culminated in his "Religion of Humanity", which presaged the development of religious humanist and secular humanist organizations in the 19th century. He wrote several books include: The Course in Positive Philosophy, A General View of Positivism, Introduction to positive philosophy, The Positive Philosophy of Auguste Comte, and The philosophy of mathematics.
