Humphrey William Bouverie Carpenter was born in Oxford, England. He was an English biographer, writer and radio broadcaster. He educated at the Dragon School Oxford, Marlborough College, and Keble College, Oxford. His notable output of biographies included: J. R. R. Tolkien, W.H. Auden, Ezra Pound(winner of the Duff Cooper Memorial Prize), Evelyn Waugh, Benjamin Britten, Dennis Potter, Robert Runcie, and Spike Milligan. He also wrote histories of BBC Radio 3, the British satire boom of the 1960s, Angry Young Men: A Literary Comedy of the 1950s, and a centennial history of the Oxford University Dramatic Society in 1985. His Mr Majeika series of children's books enjoyed considerable popularity and were successfully adapted for television. He wrote several books include: The Inklings(Nominations: Locus Award for Best Non-Fiction), Secret Gardens, A serious character, Geniuses together, Shakespeare Without the Boring Bits, That was satire that was, Jesus, and The Seven Lives of John Murray.
