Hugo Laurenz August Hofmann von Hofmannsthal was born in Landstraße, Vienna, Austria. He was an Austrian novelist, librettist, poet, dramatist and essayist. He studied law and later philology at the University of Vienna. He wrote several plays include: Electra: A Tragedy in One Act, Die Lästigen, Der Schwierige, Jedermann, and Venice Saved. He wrote several books include: The Lord Chandos Letter, Das Gespräch über Gedichte, Ödipus und die Sphinx, The woman without a shadow, Der Unbestechliche, and An Impossible Man.
