Hugh Todd Naylor Gaitskell was born in London, England. He was a British Labour politician who held Cabinet office in Clement Attlee's governments. He was elected Labour Member of Parliament for Leeds South from 1945-1963. He won bitter leadership battles to become the Leader of the Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition from 1955 until his death in 1963, when he was on the verge of becoming prime minister. He is best known as being founder of the right-wing revisionism in the Labour Party known as Gaitskellism. He educated at Winchester College and New College, Oxford. He graduated with a first class degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics in 1927. He wrote several books include: In Defence of Politics and The Challenge of Coexistence.
